London is a modern city with a long history. In its earliest days, during the Roman occupation of Britain, the city was known as Londinium and has been mentioned in history books from as early as 121 CE. The city was occupied by the Romans, but also saw Anglo-Saxons and Britons living in the city and the surrounding area during prehistory and the Middle Ages.
